Wildersmouth Beach / Ilfracombe
We had an unplanned trip to North Devon in 2023 staying at Westward Ho! and exploring the nearby villages and towns during a week of rainy weather.
It wasn't a trip which would revolve around photography, it was a break and a chance to relax while eating and drinking our way along the coast. Of course, I still took my Fujifilm X-E4 with me just in case, however, my main focus when taking any snapshot photos was using the Canon Sureshot AF-7. A simple little film camera belonged to my nan who used to spend a lot of time in Devon, and I thought it was a nice little project to use her old camera while exploring the places she loved to holiday (separate blog of those images coming soon).
Anyway back to the matter at hand and an afternoon spent on Wildersmouth Beach in Ilfracombe.
I didn't expect to find a slice of Iceland, but that is what Wildersmouth Beach reminded me of as we strolled the black sands under a clearing mist. The beach is small but with dramatic jagged rocks and crashing waves which crash with ferocity and roll that reminded me of the sneaker waves on the south coast of Iceland. The sandstone rocks and their details caught my eye and an iPhone photo just wouldn't do and so out came the 'big' camera for the only time on the trip.
I got carried away as the light occasionally broke through the haze and could have spent the entire afternoon just walking this small few meters of the beach as the light shifted on the rocks.
